GPS Updates - Self Service Information

Take advantage of E911 Phase II functionality and other GPS applications! All you need is a quick software update.

Why do I need to update my phone's software?
Due to a software issue, Nextel customers with the i58sr, i88s, i205, i305, i530, i710, i730, i733, i736 and i830 Motorola iDEN® phones may require an update. This update will fully refresh E911 Phase II and other GPS capabilities, such as turn-by-turn driving directions, for those customers. Just follow the instructions below to see if your phone is affected and to get your free GPS software update.

What is E911 Phase II?
E911 Phase II is a technology that uses the global positioning system (GPS) to provide 911 call centers with the approximate physical location of the wireless phone used to place a 911 call. This technology is available for i58sr, i88s, i205, i305, i530, i710, i730, i733, i736, i830, and i860 Motorola iDEN® phones in those areas where Nextel has deployed Phase II service.

How do I know if I need to update my phone's software?
If your phone was purchased after October 1, 2004, you do not need to update your phone. If you purchased you phone before then, you can check by doing one of the following:

  1. Go to Motorola's site and enter your phone's serial number and IMEI in the fields provided. A message will display, telling you if you need to update your phone's software.


  2. Refer to the table below to find out which software version is currently running on your phone. Then review the list of phones and software versions that require an update to see if you're affected.

What do I need to update my phone's software?
You have two options. You can update your phone's software yourself or you can visit a Nextel-owned Retail Store or Authorized Service Center and have them update your phone's software free of charge.

  1. If you want to update your phone's software yourself, you can use a Motorola data cable you already own to download the software upgrade from Motorola's site. You can also request a self-service kit, which includes a data cable, the software upgrade and instructions, or call Motorola at 800-590-9845 from Mon-Fri: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. EST.


  2. For the i205, i305, i530, i710, i730, i733, i736 or i830, follow these upgrade instructions.


  3. For the i58sr or i88s, follow these upgrade instructions.


  4. To have your phone's software updated for free at a Nextel service center. Be sure you know your phone's IMEI and then find your closest repair location.
Please note: No matter which option you choose, once you have updated your phone's software, you may need to reset your privacy settings.

How long will the update process take?
If you choose to upgrade your software yourself, it will take approximately 10 minutes, depending on your computer system. If you choose to go to a Nextel Retail Store for the upgrade, please allow 30 minutes. You may also want to call ahead to find the best time of day to come in for your upgrade.

How to Find Your Phone's Software Version

  1. From the idle screen, press #, *, “Menu”, Right Arrow.

  2. Scroll down to "Unit Info".

  3. Press the key under 'View' or the 'OK' nav button, depending on phone model.

  4. Scroll down to 'Software'.

  5. Press the key under 'Select' or the 'OK' Nav button.

  6. The software version is listed first and normally starts with 'R', followed by a string of alpha/digits in the Rxx.xx.xx format.
