September 20, 2004, GPS Issue Resolved: Software Upgrades
for Motorola Phones Continually Rolling Out to Nextel Customers.
The solution for the global positioning satellite (GPS) location
software issue impacting the i58sr, i88s, i205, i305, i530, i710,
i730, i733, i736, and i830 Motorola iDEN® phones is now available
for all of these phones and continues to be made available to Nextel’s
customer base.
The solution, which involves a two-part fix, has been provided
for the i205, i305, i530, i710, i730, i733, i736, and i830 phones.
Beginning next week, a separate GPS software fix will be available
for the i58sr and i88s phones. The two-part fix includes a network
solution, which was completed on July 25, and a software update
on affected phones. With the availability of the GPS software
fix for all affected phones, Motorola and Nextel remain committed
to upgrading all affected phones to a new software version and completing
the second part of the overall fix.
The GPS commercial services capabilities for the i58sr and i88s
phones have continued to be fully functional; however, these phones
require a software update to ensure they can take advantage of E911
Phase II functionality in those areas where Nextel has deployed
Phase II service. E911 Phase II is a technology that uses information
from the GPS network to provide 911 call centers with the approximate
physical location of the wireless phone used to place a 911 call.
E911 service continues to be available throughout Nextel’s
National Network, transmitting the caller’s callback number
and the nearest cell site to local emergency call centers where
those call centers are capable of receiving that information.
All of Nextel's Motorola iDEN phones continue to be fully operational
with regard to other services, including cellular phone calls, Nextel
Direct Connect® calls, voice mail, Caller ID and data applications
such as text messaging, email and SMS. Nextel will continue selling
its current line of Motorola iDEN phones and will update any functionality
as required to resolve this issue.
Please check back to this site for continuing updates or update
your phone's software with these
self-service instructions.
