FAQs: Nextel Direct Connect® Services

Q:  What kind of Nextel Direct Connect calls can I make?
A:  With Nextel Direct Connect, you can make Nextel® Local Direct Connect, Nextel® Nationwide Direct Connect, Nextel® InterDirect Connect or Group Connect® calls to other Nextel users.
Nextel® Local Direct Connect service lets you instantly connect with other Nextel users within a Nextel® Local Direct Connect calling area. This can be within your home Nextel Direct Connect calling area or you can travel to a different market and instantly connect with Nextel customers in that area.
Nextel® Nationwide Direct Connect calls are Direct Connect calls made to another Nextel user located outside of your local calling area. You can make a Nextel® Nationwide Direct Connect call from any calling area to any calling area. For example, when you're on the road, you can instantly contact a colleague back at the office. Or, while in your home market, you can instantly contact a friend who lives three states away. Calls will be charged on a pay-as-you-go basis, or you can sign up for unlimited access. Calls also deduct from the Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes included in your plan.
Nextel® InterDirect Connect calls are Direct Connect calls to and from the U.S. to other iDEN subscribers from Canada, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and Mexico. You can also travel to any of those countries and make local Direct Connect calls within the country, Direct Connect calls back to the U.S., or Direct Connect calls between any of the Latin American countries. Calls will be charged on a pay-as-you-go basis, or you can sign up for unlimited access. Calls also deduct from the Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes included in your plan.
Group Connect® allows you to make Direct Connect calls with up to 20 other Group Connect® capable users anywhere on the Nextel National Network. Groups can be quickly and easily created and managed from your Group Connect® capable handset. Calls will be charged on a pay-as-you-go basis, or you can sign up for unlimited access. Calls also deduct from the Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes included in your plan.

Q:  What do I need to use Nextel® Local, Nationwide, International or Group Direct Connect services?
A:  You need three things:
A Nextel phone. (Group Connect® is only available on specific Group Connect® capable phones.)
A rate plan that's provisioned with Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes.
Your contact's full Nextel Direct Connect number (Area ID*Network ID*Member ID).

Q:  How do I make a Nextel Direct Connect call?
A:  For 3-Digit Series phones (ex. i730):
  1. Enter the Area ID number and press (or scroll through your Phonebook to locate the name/number and skip to step 4).
  2. Enter the Network ID number and press "*".
  3. Enter the Member ID number.
  4. Press and hold the Nextel Direct Connect button while you talk, or press under Alert and then press the button.
For BlackBerry, i95cl, i90c, i80s, i88s, i85s, i60c, i58sr, i55sr, i50sx, i35s and i30sx phone models:
  1. Enter the Area ID and press "*".
  2. Enter the Network ID and press "*".
  3. Enter the Member ID (displayed on your phone as Prvt Ready).
  4. Press and hold the Nextel Direct Connect button.
For i1000plus, i1000 i2000, i2000plus, i700plus, i550plus, i500plus, i3701, i3901 and i6001 phones:
  1. Press the Mode key until Prvt Ready appears.
  2. Follow the four steps listed above.

Q:  How am I charged for Nextel® Local Direct Connect calls?
A:  You are only charged for the Nextel® Local Direct Connect calls that you initiate. For those calls:
Your cellular rate plan may include a bucket of Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes. Minutes of use are deducted from your monthly allotment of Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes.
Overage charges may apply if you exceed your rate plans' monthly allotment of Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes. Many of our rate plans include Unlimited Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes.
All Nextel® Local Direct Connect calls round to the second.
The first person to press the Nextel Direct Connect button after 6 seconds of silence is considered the call initiator and assumes charges for the call.

Q:  How am I charged for Nextel® Nationwide Direct Connect, Nextel® InterDirect Connect® or Group Connect® calls?
A:  You will be charged:
Pay As You Go - You can pay as you go with a per minute/per participant charge. Minutes will be deducted from your monthly allotment of Nextel® Local Direct Connect minutes. Minutes deducted are calculated by the number of active participants on the call by the total length of the call. Overage charges may apply.
Other things to keep in mind:
You are only charged for the calls that you initiate.
Calls are rounded to the second.
Nextel® Local Direct Connect overage charges vary by rate plan.
The first person to press the Direct Connect button after 6 seconds of silence is considered the call initiator and assumes charges for the call going foward.

A:  See the coverage map to identify your Nextel® Local Direct Connect calling area. If you're going to be visiting another area, you can also use the coverage map to confirm Nextel® Local Direct Connect calling areas that you will be traveling to.

Q:  I don't want everyone around me to hear my Direct Connect conversations. What can I do?
A:  You can turn off your speakerphone so that your Direct Connect calls will not be heard out loud.
You can also use an optional audio earpiece by using the VibraCall® feature (not available on all phone models) to be silently notified of incoming Nextel Direct Connect calls.

Q:  What's a Call Alert, and how do I send one?
A:  A Call Alert is a Direct Connect feature that you can use with Nextel Direct Connect and Nextel® Nationwide Direct Connect services to notify someone that you'd like to talk. It lets the person decide whether or not it's convenient to respond at that time.
For the 3-digit series phones (ex:i730), i95cl, i90c, i88s, i85s, i80s, i60c, i58sr, i55sr, i50sx, i35s and i30sx phones:
Enter the Nextel Direct Connect number of the person you would like to alert, or select a name from your Phonebook.
Press the option key under ALERT, and the Ready to Alert screen displays.
Press and hold the Nextel Direct Connect button until Alert Successful displays. The alert plays intermittently until the recipient answers, queues, or clears it.
For i1000, i2000, i500plus, i550plus, i700plus, i1000plus, and i2000plus phones:
Press the "Mode" key until you see "Prvt Ready."
Press the option key under "Alert."
Enter the Nextel Direct Connect number of the person you would like to alert, or select a name from your stored list.
Press and hold the Nextel Direct Connect button until you see "Alert-Sent Successful" on the display. The alert plays intermittently until the recipient answers, queues, or clears it.
The first person to press the Nextel Direct Connect button after a Call Alert is sent is considered the call initiator and is billed for the Nextel Direct Connect or Nextel® Nationwide Direct Connect call.

Q:  What happens if someone sends me a Call Alert?
A:  When you receive a Call Alert, your phone will emit an intermittent chirp and will display the caller's name (if stored) or Nextel Direct Connect number.You can either answer, queue or clear the call alert.
To answer the Call Alert, press the Nextel Direct Connect button.
To queue the Call Alert, press the option key under QUEUE.
To clear the Call Alert, press the option key under CLEAR.
Until you answer, queue or clear the call alert, you will not receive any additional phone, Nextel Direct Connect or Group Connect® calls.
The first person to press the Nextel Direct Connect button after a Call Alert is sent is considered the call initiator and is billed for the Nextel Direct Connect, Nextel® Nationwide Direct Connect, Nextel® InterDirect Connect® or Group Connect® call.

Q:  Am I charged for Call Alerts?
A:  No, you are not charged for sending a Call Alert. However, the first person to respond to the call alert will be considered the call initiator and will be billed for the call.
