| Once considered a handy
wireless safety feature, the ability to call 911 by pressing the number
9 key for two seconds has flooded state and local emergency
dispatch centers with inadvertent calls. This takes up operator time
that should otherwise be spent on actual emergencies.
Among Nextel customers, these calls come from i500plus™,
i550plus™, i700plus™ and i2000™
phones when they are accidentally bumped. The problem
can be compounded when the redial key is used after the initial
911 call.
To minimize this problem, some Nextel Service Centers are offering
free software upgrades to Nextel plus phone users. Your phone
must have the correct
software version to reduce the potential for unintentional emergency
calls. Contact your local Nextel
Service Center for more information.
With the upgraded software, the number 9 key is no longer
preprogrammed as an Emergency 911 feature. The upgraded software
for i500plus™, i550plus™, i700plus™
and i1000plus phones is available at a Nextel
Service Center near you. If you already have a data
cable for your phone, you can download the software online using
iDEN Update.
Accidental 911 calls can also be prevented by activating the Keypad
Lock feature on your i500plus™, i550plus™,
i700plus™ or i2000™ phone.
